Kristin

2/22 Close - Version 2

"Kristin” was my most difficult Esterita Austin (see esteritaaustin.com) type portrait to date.   It was made in late February of 2012.  And, as you can see by the white quilting guidelines still visible in her hair, this portrait has not been quilted yet!  Her portrait was also made with the peach colored commercial print batiks fabrics from the online fabric store SewBatiks (see sewbatiks.com).  I selected hair fabric with a rose in it to represent the rose garden where her memorial plaque was placed, and fabrics with branches, leaves, and flowers for her face to signify that her body is a part of the earth now.

Kristin was my friend who died in April of 2011, at age 42, of colon cancer. If you, or anyone you know, are under age 50 and have any kind of symptoms, or any history of cancer in the family, ask your doctor if you can be tested early for colon cancer.  It could save your life or the life of someone you love.
